Questions about our trip

We plan to fly into Sacremento and drive down to Yosemite NP then make our way up the Oregon coast to Portland for a few days in mid July. We will fly out of Portland. We would like suggestions as to what to see and do. We like nature, wildlife and culture. Also suggestions for where to stay would be great. We would like to go to Hood River and see the Colombia River Gorge if possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

Questions about our trip

Not sure what your budget is and if you are planning to rent a car. The latter would be needed for visits to the Gorge. In Portland, OMSI is a great visit along with the Museum of Art. Hikes in Forest Park are also nicely trailed. If you are interested in music or other cultural activities let us know your preferences. Where to stay definitely depends on your budget. Let us know, we can help!

Questions about our trip

To be helpful, we need to know what sort of time frame we%26#39;re dealing with (how many days?), what sort of budget, etc. Reservations along the Oregon coast are fairly expensive in the summer and may require minimum 2 night stays. Yosemite is in the opposite direction from Sacto than the Oregon coast. I interpret a ';few days'; as three days. If so, you will probably have to forego the Gorge, since it will take you about 3 days to get to Portland via the coast...and that doesn%26#39;t allow for 2-night stays anywhere (or much time experiencing anyplace).

If you had more time, I would suggest Ashland/Jacksonville and Eugene (for culture); the jetboats out of Gold Beach (for wildlife spotting; along with the acquarium in Newport and the elk preserve at Reedsport).

But in just three days your windshield will be your window to our world.

%26gt;%26gt;Reservations along the Oregon coast are fairly expensive in the summer and may require minimum 2 night stays%26lt;%26lt;

That is mostly for the north coast, Cannon Beach area. Other than maybe a few B%26amp;B%26#39;s, I know of no lodging that requires a minimum 2 night stay on the coast, other than the Cannon Beach area as stated.

There is a very wide range of lodging available, from as little as $40/night for an older motel on Hwy 101, up to and above $250/night for a deluxe oceanfront resort.

We do need some idea of the time you have for your visit!

Arch Cape also requires a 2-3 night stay at the Inn at Arch Cape. There was a place in Manzanita that I called once that did also, these were for summer and as late as mid September.

I like the idea of staying at the Coast for 2-3 nights then to Portland for 2-3 or however long you will be able to.

Right in downtown Portland is a fabulous Park .. Forest Park with plenty of hiking and photo opportunities, as well as the Japanese Gardens and Washington Park. The Gorge/Falls is a great day trip ..

sorry if I repeated everything that has already been said lol...

Yes, both Manzanita and Arch Cape are in the Cannon Beach *area*!

;-)

Thanks for all your advice. We may fly into Portland then rent a car and spend 3 days in the Portland area before we drive down the coast to head to Yosemite then fly out of Sacremento. We usually stay in local inns or hotels like Hilton Garden Inns or Hampton Inn. We are going to New England in October and have already booked local inns and Hampton inns.

We have been to San Francisco, Hearst Castle, Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Diego so we will enjoy the Oregon coast and then head to Yosemite.

I suppose I need to make myself clear about our trip from Yosemite to Portland. We will take I-5 to Portland then enjoy Portland a couple of days and go over to Hood River for one day before we fly out of Portland. I%26#39;ve checked airfare and we will fly into Sacremento and tour Yosemite first. We have travelled up and down the coast of California so this trip is just a fast one up to Portland. Thanks

OK, you%26#39;ve done it. I have no idea whether you%26#39;re flying in or out of SACTO/PDX or driving up/down the Oregon Coast or zipping one way or the other on I-5.

All of which makes offering travel advice a unique challenge.

Sorry for the confusion!!! We have visited the coast of S. Oregon and California all the way to San Diego. On this trip we will fly into Sacremento and visit Yosemite NP then drive up I-5 to Portland. We would like to visit Portland for 2-3 days then go over to Hood River area for 1 day. We will then fly out of Portland.

Okay, got it (I think!).

So by going up I-5 to Portland, you will not be anywhere near the coast.

How many nights do you plan in-between Yosemite and Portland?
