Did you see the article in Sunset about the 5o favorite western campgrounds. Honneyman, Silver Creek Falls and Wallowa Lake were the first three. We have stayed at all of those. then in another category called local favorites were Bull Prairie near heppner, Strawberry near John Day. Oxbow and Cape Blanco. We stayed at Strawbeery it was pretty tiny then. would guess it still is.

We%26#39;ve camped in several of the places listed, including North Rim at Grand Canyon, Wallowa Lake, Apgar in Glacier, Watchman in Zion, and Honeyman. Never did camp at Silver Creek Falls, although we have hiked there.
We%26#39;ve pretty much given up camping--never did RV--just slept in the pickup canopy and cooked on the Coleman stove. We used to do some long trips, and also spent many summers camping and waterskiing at The Cove Palisades and Fishhook Park near Pasco WA.
I figure 50 years of camping is enough! My folks started camping when I was 12. I think we saw every national park on the West Coast.
Favorite camping places
It was an interesting article, but the 3 listed (Honeyman, Silver Creek Falls and Wallowa Lake) are all State Park campgrounds mainly for first-time campers with families. Depending on your situation, my very very favorite campgrounds in Oregon are Anthony Lakes in Eastern Oregon and Waldo Lake in Central Oregon-they are both Forest Service campgrounds-not as fancy-no showers but quiet and pleasant-longer to drive to but worth it! I almost hate to divulge this information because I%26#39;d like to keep them a secret but I%26#39;m feeling a bit generous today.

OregonExplorer--I agree, I like to camp in more remote places. I cannot stand campground showers and bathrooms...would much rather just dig a hole. Yes, seriously, lol. Course a clean put toilet is nice...that is as ';luxury'; as we go when we camp. We mostly backpack though to get away from all that.
Just yesterday we were trying to figure out where we will head off to this summer. The Wallowas are a definite. Other than that and the Olympics, its all up in the air.
Our all time favorite place to camp was a boat-in or hike-in campground on Spirit Lake at Mt. St. Helens called Cedar Creek. The campsites were right next to the lake, it had a small beach, and we dipped our water out of the creek that flowed down the hill into the lake. The outhouse was up the hill a little further. :-)
Too bad it all disappeared when the mountain erupted.
Kitters--That place sounds like it was beautiful. We used to camp at Suttle Lake many times each summer as I was growing up. With the fires from several years ago, it just doesn%26#39;t have that same feel to it. Granted, not as bad as an eruption, but still...
Okay, oregone, one last place I couldn%26#39;t think of last night. (sorry it took so long, but I don%26#39;t have a computer at home so had to wait until I got to work and a quick break.) Anyway, on the Upper Rogue River on Hwy 62 on the way to the southern road to Crater Lake are two really nice Forest Service campgrounds called Union Creek Campground and Farewell Bend-Farewell Bend has several spots right on the Rogue-beautiful spots. And, it%26#39;s right next to a beautiful trail system that links to Natural Bridges area-a terrific spot. Union Creek runs through Union Creek Campground in places. The added bright spot of this place is a short walk to a little store in Union Creek to get an ice cream cone!
Oh, and before I go, a quick warning so you don%26#39;t drive a long way and get disappointed---both Anthony Lake and Waldo Lake are for non-motorized boats only-that%26#39;s why they are nice and quiet.

I retired from FS and we typicaly prefer FS CGs. Their layouts tend to vary a lot, particularly in the older sites. We have camped Waldo Lake and Anthony Lakes, too. Really liked Anthony Lakes. Suttle Lake also good. Some good ones in Newberry Crater. The one between the two lakes is best. We like Crane Prairie best on the Cascade lakes SB. Once we were on south end of CG and a bald eagle was perched in a tree above us. he came and went and came back several times. Fun to watch an eagle up close like that. Odell Lake has a nice one on north shore, forget name just now but right on lake shore. Lostine River has a nice one or two. you can really hear the river.
And I will not mention our favorite one.
