Memorial Day in Oregon

We are thinking of flying to Oregon for my 40th birthday over Memorial day weekend. I love the coast so would like to spend a few days there but also love the mountains, waterfalls.

I know not to expect sunny 70 degree weather daily but also don%26#39;t want to be miserable. I live in Michigan where we have 9 months (ha) of winter grey already!

Memorial Day in Oregon

Not sure what the conditions will be at Crater Lake Memorial Day weekend, but if you like waterfalls you%26#39;ll want to include Silver Falls State Park on your itinerary. The 10 waterfall loop is spectacular and will be at its prime with the full spring runoff. The rainforest trail takes you under and behind several of the falls. The park is about 20 miles east of Salem and the time spent there can be combined with your travels between Portland and Crater Lake or the coast.

Memorial Day in Oregon

Did you maybe mean to post this in another specific forum, rather than Crater Lake? If you are just coming for memorial day weekend, all your time would be spent getting to Crater Lake and back.

However, it would be very possible to spend a couple of days at the coast, and fit in a day in the Columbia River Gorge/Mt. Hood Area at either the beginning or end of your trip.

If you give us a little more information on exactly what area of the coast you are interested in visiting, and the rest of the time frame for your trip, we will be able to provide you with the appropriate information.

Crater Lake will still be snowbound! The full rim drive does not open until mid-late June, so you%26#39;d have to enter from the south. It%26#39;s a long way from anywhere and will indeed take much time. And I don%26#39;t think you want to drive hours and hours to see more snow . . . ;-)

Silver Falls is lovely with both short and long ';hikes';. I use the quotes because some of the short trails are very wide and easy, it%26#39;s not really ';hiking';.

Anyhow, the north coast will be the busiest, central a bit less busy. One note - you should book your lodging as *soon* as possible! Memorial Day is the third busiest weekend of the year here.

Welcome to TA and we%26#39;re looking forward to helping you plan a great birthday :-)

Greetings!

I agree with Half-Brit. I have lived in Oregon now for over 50 years. Crater Lake is up really high and snow doesn%26#39;t leave until at least last July or August. As you drive along the cleared highway to the South, there is a very high wall of snow on either side of the highway. My vote is our coast-midcoast to southern would be the warmest. Really cute town called Yachats at mid-coast--not too touristy. Jagged black rocks with waves splashing - very romantic lodge called Overleaf Lodge. Whatever you do, enjoy your birthday!
