Confused about Yaquina/Oregon Coast

I am headed to the Oregon coast in about 3 weeks. I am a bit confused about some of the places. I see there is a Yaquina Head/Yaquina Lighthouse, and also a Yachats Ocean Road Natural Area. Are these 3 separate areas? Is one better to see than the others? Also I see Cape Perpetua. Is that a totally different area and what is there? Also I see Cape Foulweather which is north of Yachats. Is that a park or an overlook? Are these areas easily accessible from Hwy 101? Thank you. The people on this forum have been so helpful and the advice has been very valuable.

Confused about Yaquina/Oregon Coast

Yes, all different places. There are two lighthouses near/in Newport; one at Yaquina Head, and one at the mouth of Yaquina Bay. Yachats Ocean Road Natural Area is 25 miles south. Of the three, I%26#39;d pick Yaquina Head as the ';must see';.

Cape Perpetua is a few miles south of Yachats, and also worth some time. A couple short walks will take you along some dramatic coastline, and a hike or drive up to the top of the Cape affords what is touted to be the best view on the Oregon coast.

Yes, Cape Foulweather is an overlook. There%26#39;s a little gift shop there. It%26#39;s a nice stop for some, but not a must in my book.

Confused about Yaquina/Oregon Coast

Just drive down coast from Depoe bay to Florence and you can see them all.

Cape Foulwether is large headlans about 10 mile north of Newport then abot thee mile north of Newport in Yaquina Head with Yaquina Head Lighthouse, then in newport is Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. Cape Perpatius is about 30 miles south of newport and even bigger headland. with several nice inlets where the ocean churns. Yachats Ocean Road Natural Area a new one for me.

Yachats Ocean Road is a State Park. Basically, it is a 3/4 mile long road that starts at the Yachats River and stretches south along the bluff, in front of a couple of motels and many private residences. There is beach/river access and great views, but not necessarily a destination.

Den Is that by the Overleaf? we walked along that trail when we stayed there. Or maybe it was the Fireside.

Thank you so much for your replies. I was so confused between all of them. Are these all easily accessible from Hwy 101? It sounds like they are. I am not sure if I have to look them up on MapQuest.

You%26#39;re thinking about the 804 Trail, phirl. Ocean Road Natural Area is just south of the river.

Yes, all are easily accessed from hwy 101 angeleyes, and there are signs posted to help you find them.

Thanks for clearing that up Mistletoe. maybe we should check out the Yachats ocean Road sometime not sure we have been out to beach on south side of river.

Angel. Get a State Highway map from ODOT, all of that is marked on that. Most visitor centers have them. even easier to find is the MP listing for 101, when lists the interesting places along 101 by mileposts. That is full of ads but info is good.

I will have to try to find that MP listing. I saw a review for that Ocean Road on TA and it didn%26#39;t say where it was. THanks for the help!1 You guys are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it is a clear day, drive up to the top of Cape Perpetua, park and walk out (maybe 100 yards) to the the lookout shelter. This was all done by the Civilian Conservation Corps around 1935. There was a secret radar station located somewhere on the top of hte Cape during WWII. It%26#39;s a couple of mile south of Yachats.

The ocean road might be worth a swing-thru if it%26#39;s high tide since there is a blowhole there. You might also like to stop south of Yachats at Devil%26#39;s Churn if the tide is in.

The Yaquina Bay lighthouse is only mildly interesting; Yaquina Head much more so. Climb the lighthouse if you want. There is a decent interpretive center there and you can see the old quarry - rocks from which were used in building much of Newport.

Again if it is clear, Cape Foulweather is a beautiful lookout. Slip into the gift shop and look out the windows. The building used to be a residence. You can imagine the fury of winter storms beating against it!

I know you are covering a lot of miles but none of these should take much time to stop by :-)

Angeleyes, if you will go to www.VisitTheOregonCoast.com you will be at the site for the ';Mile-By-Mile Guide'; to the Oregon Coast and that should have a printable map that will help you a lot. It lists attractions by their milepost location.

You can call 888-628-2101 or e-mail info@VisitTheOregonCoast.com and they will probably send you a copy of the publication. With 3 weeks before your tip you should have time to receive it if you call and speak to someone.
