Girls Trip to Oregon Coast

Hi everyone!

My girlfriends and I want to plan a trip to the Oregon coast.

We%26#39;re from Chicago and have no knowledge of what the best places to go are. We%26#39;re thinking wineries, site-seeing, maybe biking and the DEFINITELY the beach!!!

We%26#39;re all around 27 years old....any ideas for fun spots to see/things to do? It would just be from Wed-Sun in the summer so we%26#39;re limited with time.

Well, you had me right up to ';wineries'; LOL!! There are no wineries worth mentioning along the coast. Breweries, on the other hand, are a different story!!

Assume you%26#39;ll be flying into PDX. If that%26#39;s the case, considering the short stay, I%26#39;d suggest you find an oceanfront place in or near Cannon Beach. From here you can easily explore from Astoria to Tillamook without spending time moving from one lodging to annother. There are a tremendous amount of things to do in this area from history, to sightseeing to some of the best hiking trails in Oregon.

Spending some time in Seaside on the north coast would be nice. There are several places for lodging right on the promenade. Go to Yummy Wine Bar for some great food and wine tasting, they offer flights there that are fun, your server will pair the wines with your food choices for you if you like. www.seasideor.com is a nice website for this area, about 10 minutes from Cannon Beach and 20 minutes from Astoria. Enjoy your trip! :)

Den%26#39;s right; ';there are no wineries worth mentioning along the coast.'; (Unless you%26#39;re into fruit and berry wines) But, you could plan your route to and/or from the coast to pass by some good wineries, especially if your destination was the central coast. Would be a bit of a longer drive, though.

There are obvious differences of opinion about where best to stay on the coast. I don%26#39;t think I%26#39;d be misleading in saying that, if you are thinking Jersey Shore, pick Seaside. If something like Carmel is more appealing, Cannon Beach or Manzanita would be a good choice. Regardless, you should be firming up plans and making reservations ASAP.

You might want to share with us what your idea of ';the beach'; is. If it%26#39;s pouring on the lotion and getting tan...sporting your new bikinis...well, you might just be disappointed. If magnificent seascapes, braving the elements, beachcombing and exploring tidepools is what you have in mind, have we got a coastline for you! Summers on the Oregon Coast can be chilly and foggy, interspersed with warm sunny stretches. You take your chances with the weather, but should be prepared (and dressed) for whatever happens...and relish whatever you get.

Hey! Thanks for all the great input...so it sounds like the coast isn%26#39;t the way to go. Everyone%26#39;s super interested in ';wine country'; travels. Would Portage\Euguene area be better for this??

Before you are put off on the coast, given that you are coming all the way out here, I would not ';short'; yourselves on seeing at least some of the truly spectacular coast. Long way to go for just the wine. From the wine country, you could take any of several roads for a day excursion, or overnight, to, say, Cannon Beach, Newport/Yachats, etc.

Portage? I assume that means Portland? ;-) Yes, the heart of wine country is within an hour%26#39;s drive of the city. Most visitors do wine tasting as a day trip(s) so they still have easy access to Portland%26#39;s great restaurant scene. And there%26#39;s not much to do in wine country after dark.

So, consider a couple nights in Portland, and a couple on the coast. Wine country%26#39;s nice, but the coast is really the best reason to visit Oregon. I%26#39;d bet you%26#39;d love spending time in a place like Cannon Beach, regardless of the weather.

LOL, oregonpoppa, that is *exactly* what I was thinking :-))

CHILADIES, I will suggest two nights in Cannon Beach, the rest in the wine country. Might start another thread with ';wine country'; in the title.

Cannon Beach has a great beach, lots of upscale shops, is quaint, cute and compact. Get an oceanfront hotel right in town and you can walk to everything. Good restaurants, too :-)
