how long should we stay?

We are planning a trip down the coast of Oregon during the last week of July.I have gotten advice about staying in Cannon Beach instead of Seaside %26amp; staying in Newport/Yachats instaed of Lincoln City.

How long should we stay in each place? Should we stay longer in the Cannon Beach area?

I have two small kids...4 %26amp; 7. My older son has a physical disability %26amp; uses a walker.

We have roughly about a week or less planned for Oregon Coast %26amp; then will be driving to CA.

I have seen good reviews for the Overleaf LOdge in Yachats. Thinking about a vacation Rental for Cannon Beach. Would like to stay somewhere on the beach and with easy access to beach.

grateful for any advice...thanks

how long should we stay?

The Overleaf Lodge comes well recommended by many posters and is in a beautiful location. If it is within your budget that would be a nice place to stay. However, there isn%26#39;t a sandy beach in front, it%26#39;s a bluff.

There is not a lot to ';do'; in Yachats; for children%26#39;s activities you%26#39;d need to drive north to Newport, which is about 30-35 minutes on a straight flat road.

Do you like to drive around and look at interesting sites? Or visit museums, that sort of attraction? Newport has a lot to offer, including a good aquarium:

If you split your time, three nights in Cannon Beach, three in Yachats or Newport, that would give you 2+ days in each area.

From Yachats, it%26#39;s about five hours drive to Crescent City, CA and the start of the redwoods.

Thanks for your reply :-)

How far is Cannon beach from Newport?

Should we stay somewhere between Newport/Yachats %26amp; Crescent City? It seems like a long drive.

What%26#39;s a good place to stay in Newport or near Newport? (besides the overleaf)

Newport to Cannon Beach is about 2.5 hours not counting stops.

There are many hotels in Newport. However, most of them are up on a bluff high above the beach, which would be difficult for your son. This one is on the beach level:

The hotels along the Coast, at least from Manzanita to Cannon Beach, require 2 night minimums which might determine how long you stay also.

For vacation rentals, also look in Manzanita and Arch Cape.. there are homes close to the beach and the areas are quite beautiful. Also look at the Inn at Arch Cape, every ';room'; has a kitchenette, bath, fireplace and a little room or closet chock full of games and books and things to do.

I would book asap for the summer in Cannon Beach, www.cannon-beach.net is a nice website for the area. You could make day trips to Seaside (ten minutes) and Astoria (30 minutes) from there if you want to explore other areas. Have fun! :)

Hello ZamyZamy!

I can only really comment on Seaside and Cannon Beach (also some Astoria), so here goes:

With two small(er) kids, you%26#39;ll probably spend more time in Seaside. Cannon Beach has primarily art galleries and bistros while Seaside has more family restaurants, saltwater taffy stores, a few coney-island style amusement park rides, putt-putt golf, and arcades.

The beaches are certainly prettier in Cannon Beach than Seaside (Haystack Rock, Ecola State Park, Short Sands, Hug Point, etc.), but Seaside is better equipped for persons requiring a walker: Seaside has a concrete promenade running for over a mile right along the beach, while Cannon Beach does not. Not all the beaches are truly accessible, either; some have steep trails leading down to them (Short Sands and Ecola, for example), so I%26#39;d keep that in mind as well.

So that said: I%26#39;d split the time up 60/40 between Cannon Beach/Seaside and Newport/Yachats; as to which town you actually stay in as far as Seaside and Cannon Beach, that%26#39;s up to preference (they%26#39;re only a half hour%26#39;s drive apart, so staying in one town shouldn%26#39;t preclude you from spending time in the other). I%26#39;d recommend checking on vrbo.com for great deals on rentals both in Cannon Beach and Seaside:

This property in particular could be of interest based on location (right off the beach, in downtown Cannon Beach and within a few blocks of Haystack Rock). We booked friends (grandparents, parents, and two girls 7 and 10) there two years ago for our wedding, and they loved it! Though their rates have gone up from then, it still seems to be a pretty good deal at $195/night:

FYI: you%26#39;ll probably get more bang for your buck in Seaside.

Holler if you have any more questions. Good luck!

:-)

Thank you for your reply!

I have just completed booking our stay in Cannon Beach %26amp; Newport.

We will stay 3 nights @ Ecola lodge %26amp; 2 nights @ Hallmark in Newport.

Thanks for the info on Seaside. We will probably drive to Seaside for at least one of the days to do kid stuff %26amp; the walk on the promenade sounds good with the walker.

Now i need to decide where to decide on our way down to CA. We will probbaly stay in Bandon or brookings %26amp; then head to the redwoods from there.

Any suggestions????

Thanks

I think you will be happy with Ecola Lodge, it%26#39;s in a good location, just a short walk to the ocean from this property. We stay several weeks a year at our beach cottage in Seaside, so let me know if you have any specific questions on this area. www.seasideor.com is a nice website for the area. Don%26#39;t miss feeding the seals at the aquarium here! :)

The Bandon or Brookings question would depend on how far south you venture during your Newport stay. I%26#39;m guessing not far, assuming you%26#39;re planning to visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium (much better than the one in Seaside, even if you can%26#39;t feed the seals).

You could easily spend the better part of a day between Newport and Florence, especially if you include a dune buggy ride (which I think you%26#39;d all enjoy). And you don%26#39;t want to short-change yourselves on the dramatic scenery between Port Orford and Brookings. So I%26#39;d suggest Bandon. If you find yourselves with time to spare in getting there, drive out to the coastal beaches/parks west of Coos Bay/North Bend.

Wondering if your kids would enjoy Once Upon a Breeze in Cannon Beach.... Maybe the best kite shop on the planet! And an activity that everyone can enjoy.

Bandon is a pleasant small town with an ';old town'; section and a little harbour; Gold Beach has the river and may be more reasonably priced for oceanfront (although they are set back about 100 yards); Brookings is much larger than both and has only one oceanfront hotel.

Check Sunset Motel or Windermere in Bandon; Gold Beach Inn in Gold Beach; Best Western Oceanfront Inn in Brookings.

Where is you next stop in CA? That may have some impact on where your southern Oregon coast stop is.
