Oregon camping trip

I%26#39;m starting to plan a camping trip to Oregon from California. Our plan is to get out of the heat here in central ca in July. Our time frame is about 10 days.

We are traveling with two kids, 11 and 8. We will either be tent camping or tent trailer. Campground suggestions needed and help with itinerary. We would like to spend time at the beach, fishing, general sightseeing, shopping and just enjoying the oregon coast. Would Crater Lake be a good idea?

Oregon camping trip

We have camped many places in Oregon. never have chosen Crater Lake. CG there is just a cg, no running brook, splashing river, kocean noise or lake shore, and many of our cgs have one more of those.

Diamond Lake to me is better choice in that area.

If you plan on coast you may want to make reservations soon. we booked 4 spots at Sunset Bay SP several months ago for Aug and did not get choice locations. 4 sites together makes it a bit harder. and Sunset Bay is pretty far from Portland. Maybe the cgs further south would be more available.

Forest Service has several cgs Reedsport to Yachats, they are not quite as popular as SPs, but are fine for tent or pop-ups (we have one of those), Many of FS sites do not have hook-ups and more do not have showers.

Central Oregon near Bend has many good cgs

Crater Lake is nowhere near the coast, and you can%26#39;t fish there, LOL!

You might look at Brookings. There is a SP there, Harris Beach. It%26#39;s up on a high bluff and with no view to speak of with lots of woods. You have to walk or drive down to the beach.

There is also Port of Brookings. They have an RV park/campground right on the beach by the marina. It%26#39;s not quiet because it%26#39;s also a public area, but the beach is great and there is fishing right there too.

Gold Beach has several campgrounds that are slightly upriver. Lots of fishing there! There is also one out on the south jetty area.

Both those towns are in southern Oregon. The drive up Hwy 101 from Eureka is very nice. There is also a campgound/RV park in Crescent City called Shoreline. It is on the beach near the marina and you get free passes to the city pool. Lots to do and see around Crescent City, can give you a list if you%26#39;re interested.

Ahhh.... but you can fish in Diamond Lake. Don%26#39;t know if it%26#39;s as good as it used to be years ago, though. Regardless, I wouldn%26#39;t plan more than a couple nights there. If you made that your first stop, you could either take hwy 199 from Grants Pass (through redwoods) to hwy 101 at the coast and head north, or hwy 138/38 through Roseburg to Reedsport, then either direction on hwy 101.

Many of us consider the south coast the most scenic, but since it%26#39;s isolated and less populated, there are generally fewer camping options. It%26#39;s still scenic as you go north, but you%26#39;re gradually moving closer to population centers, so more crowded. That also means more and larger campgrounds. With kids the ages of yours, I%26#39;d think you%26#39;d at least want to go as far north as Honeyman State Park. They%26#39;d get a huge kick out of a dune buggy ride.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know that, thought of it after I hit submit, LOL! There is Diamond Lake Resort which has lake views and full hookups but is not really a ';resort';, and one pretty no-hookup campground right on the lake%26#39;s edge - sorry don%26#39;t know its%26#39; name. Lots of skeeters though I have heard!

I was trying to come up with something on/near the beach for muffya. Oceanside RV Park in Charleston, neat Coos Bay has awesome oceanfront tent sites; Honeyman (Florence) is far from the beach.

That%26#39;s ';near'; Coos Bay, near. Not neat!

I knew you guys would help me. I hate posting generic topics, but I%26#39;m stuck at home for the third week with sick kids and decided it was a good time to start planning!

I%26#39;m definately going to check out Diamond Lake as well as the southern coast. It takes us about 6-7 to get to Eureka from Fresno, so I don%26#39;t want to just drive, drive, drive.
