Someone please help... Need something to do!!

Hello, I will be heading to Corvallis in July and I need something to do! I am a huge sports fan and don%26#39;t know if hiking and sight seeing is my thing. I need to figure out something to do while out there. Is there anything to do but sight see and hike? Thank you

Someone please help... Need something to do!!

Salem has a A minor league baseball team. Portland has a AAA baseball team. Not sure if Eugene still has a baseball team. You might find some sort of track gathering. and there is always little league baseball somewhere.

I spent 5 years in Corvallis, though never in July. I do not remember finding it necessary to find something to do.

That said you shouls spend at least one day at the coast.

The Oregon Country Fair would be a great event for you, depending on the time of your visit. You%26#39;ll need to buy your tickets in advance, however, and connect with one of the shuttle buses out of Eugene to the fair (not much parking available).

The Eugene Emeralds (the Ems to us locals) are a San Diego Padre class A short season farm team. This is the epitome of small town Americana. Loyal fans, classic ballpark (with beer gardens down the foul lines), etc.

Give us specific dates of your visit and we can come up with other activities. Unfortunately, you will have just missed the USA Track %26amp; Field Championships at Hayward Field the end of June.

Around July 10th-20th is when I will be in Oregon

The Ems will be playing at home during part of that time and at Salem-Keizer (ballpark in Salem right on I-5) part of the time, so you have opportunities to see them in two places.

The Oregon Country Fair falls within your time period.

As for track and field (remember, this is ';Track Town USA!), you will have missed the year%26#39;s main events, but there are all-comers meets during your stay and these can be lots of fun to watch (and will give you a chance to see historic Hayward Field and catch up on the Steve Prefontaine legend).

It%26#39;s a shame you don%26#39;t want to do any hiking. Lots of outdoor opportunities.

Poppa when we lived in Eugene Ems were AAA, Phillies was their major leage team. We saw several games those too were fun, locals team local fans, and beer.

Couple of the Ems had long careers with the Phillies. I would mention their names if I remembered. Doyle was one I think. and maybe a catcher.

Our house was in hearing range of the ball field. you could tell when Ems were doing well.

What do you like to do at home?

Will you have 10 empty days to fill or just the evenings of each day?

Over the 15 years we%26#39;ve been here, the Ems have been associated with the Cubs, the Pirates (I think) and the Padres. It%26#39;s been Class A short season since we%26#39;ve been here. That means the season begins after college lets out (so the newbies can join the team and get a looksee) and ends early. Really good players don%26#39;t last long here; they get promoted. Some stay for several seasons (unlikely to advance very far in their careers). You have to really love baseball and like rooting for your home team, no matter what. And the Ems have a fanatic following.

The big fuss in town involving the Ems now is the return of baseball to the UofO and the creation of a brand new field next to Autzen Stadium The 4J School District owns the Civic Stadium property where the Ems have played forever and want to sell the property. There%26#39;s a major grass roots effort being waged to save Civic Stadium and get it officially recognized as a historic site so developers can%26#39;t tear it down and build something profitable there. In the meantime, the Ems are in negotiations with the UofO about playing on that new field. Civic Stadium, itself, needs a whole lot of work if it is going to survive. Last year, when I went to a game, the crowd was just as fascinated in a family of raccoons scurrying in the rafters as they were about the game on the field.

On July 4th, the crowd floods the field after the game, spreads out blankets and looks skyward for the fireworks.

And, so, abc1230, I think you would get a real kick out of attending an Ems game. While enjoying one of our local microbrews, of course.

Sorry to say it was more than 15 years ago we lived in Eugene. closer to 30. but i guess they were in the same ball park then. It was old then. but comfy

I like the Ems stadium. It%26#39;s funky and old but they have great food and it%26#39;s a fun crowd. Watch out for coons in the rafters. The Salem-Keizer ballpark is newer and pretty good too.

For local sports, don%26#39;t forget about soccer! The Portland Timbers play at PGE Park (in Portland) and games are a HOOT! There are some crazy fans, but they have their own section. :-)
