outerwear shopping

Hi all, coming from the UK, we will be in Seaside for 2 nights on 14 Sept and would like to take advantage of your tax free shopping. Top of our buying list will be waterproof/windproof jackets, warm fleeces and the like, rather than bring them over in our baggage. Items called outdoor wear in the UK, for doing things in the outdoors - walking, horse riding etc. I%26#39;ve looked at the list of shops in the outlet mall, but to be honest, many of the names mean nothing to me, so I%26#39;ve no idea if they would sell this type of clothing or not.

If we can%26#39;t get this sort of clothing in Seaside, is there somewhere else on the coast that would offer us the chance to spend! We%26#39;re driving as far as Garberville CA, but think, haivng read the TA forums, that we%26#39;ll poss be needing either wet weather gear, or at least windproof jackets, long before we get to CA.

Your help and advice would be much appreciated

Forgive me here, but are you coming *from* CA north into OR? Or vice versa? CA has warmer, drier weather than Oregon.

In Sept, there is a good chance you%26#39;ll not need waterproof outdoor wear. But if you are driving north from CA on the Oregon coast, there is a store called Fred Meyer in Brookings that will have fair prices for decent quality. Several other coastal towns also have a ';Freddie%26#39;s';. Brookings and Florence are the largest I think.

If you are looking simply for something quite inexpensive, there is a Walmart in Crescent City, CA (state tax here of 9%), and a Super Walmart in Coos Bay about halfway up the OR coast, with another standard Walmart in Newport.

As far as the outlet shopping on the coast, the Tanger Outlet Center in Lincoln City has more stores than Seaside, nearly twice as many, including an Eddie Bauer store ~ www.eddiebauer.com

There is an Eddie Bauer at the Seaside Outlets. www.seasideor.com is a nice website for Seaside. Have a great trip! :)

thank you for all the links, I%26#39;ll go and investigate more now that I know whom I%26#39;m looking for, tho Walmart%26#39;s I%26#39;m familiar with and agree, they do have some very good affordable clothing - we got great warm fleeces in Walmart Kalispell last June... so maybe we%26#39;ll be lucky again on the coast and find something there...with an Oregon emblem on!

Our road trip 14th Sept is 2 nights each @: Seaside, Pacific City, Newport, Yachats, Bandon, Brookings, Trinidad CA, Garberville; then working back north: Rio Dell CA. 1 @ White City OR, 2@ Bend, then 1 @ at Hood River, Pendleton, Lewiston ID, St. Ignatius MT, 2 @ Kalispell and then a week on a horse ranch - hence the questions about warm jackets , waterproof %26amp; windproof, fleece type outdoors clothing, for all our beach and cliff walks, the redwood hikes and then the horses.

Whilst we%26#39;re talking jackets - what are the ';yellowjackets'; I keep reading about on TA - they seem to be a pest to some folks and will we get them when we come out??

You%26#39;re all so helpful on TA - thanks again...

';Whilst we%26#39;re talking jackets - what are the ';yellowjackets'; I keep reading about on TA - they seem to be a pest to some folks and will we get them when we come out??';

Ah, yes...our unfriendly little wasps. They tend to nest in the ground (although I%26#39;ve been getting them in the eaves and behind the siding of my house in recent years). They are prevalent mostly in August adn September (although weather and mild winters can give them more or less time). Unless you threaten them you%26#39;re usually safe. The problem is that if you don%26#39;t know they%26#39;re nearby you don%26#39;t know if you%26#39;re threatening them or not. They are also attracted to meat...such as anything you have out for the barbecue or picnic. Unlike their relatives that have one sting and then die, yellowjackets have the ability to inflict multiple stings.

Now that I%26#39;ve created the plot for a horror movie, let me say that you probably have little to worry about. It could be quite cool and breezy on the coast when you visit and yellowjackets should be slowing down, if present at all. They%26#39;re a much bigger problem in the inland valleys.

You%26#39;ll probably find more yellowjackets over east. They are along the coast, but unless you plan to hike cross country, you most likely won%26#39;t be bothered. Montana back country will have them but hopefully your horses can outrun them! (Don%26#39;t laugh, I%26#39;ve done that on more than one occasion!)

I know the Newport Walmart usually has some sweatshirts that say ';Newport'; on them, so other Wally%26#39;s may also have some with emblems.

Sounds like a nice trip :-)

The Lincoln City outlet mall has a Columbia Sportwear store. Columbia specializes in waterproof and other outerwear.

The NIKE store in Seaside Outlet mall also carries outerwear, mostly for exercise.

Fred Meyer in Warrenton, about 15min drive or less from Seaside has a large selection of clothing, and also everything else, from houshold goods to groceries.

thanks for all the info on the shopping - have got it all in my folder now, so I know who to look out for as we%26#39;re driving around.

thanks also for the heads-up on the Everlasting Wasps!! Fab! :( All flying insects love me to bits, irrespective of whether I%26#39;ve got meat with me ... or not! I spend most of last year%26#39;s trip covered up and smothered in insect repellant in Glacier %26amp; Yellowstone and still managed to collect about 30+ mossy bites...seems I%26#39;ll be taking similar precautions this trip - well once we%26#39;ve left the coast anyway.....so apologies now to anyone who%26#39;s visiting where I am, cos I%26#39;m gonna be selfish %26amp; pray for cool windy days everywhere mid Sept to mid Oct!! ;);)

I see that you visited Jackson Hole; have you been to Yellowstone?

yep, we were there 22 June last year for a week - with 8ft of snow on the sides of the mountain roads -seems last winter had very heavy snow. An amazing place, it%26#39;s got it all, geoglogical weirdos, bril scenery, animals and bears, bears and more bears...
