2nd trip new ideas

My husband and I will be dropping our son at camp near Portland in August. Last year, we spent our 5 nights visiting the wine region, and Cannon Beach, It was the perfect vacation. I am looking for some different ideas this year - not sure if we should head north, south or east. Would it be feasible to make our way up to Vancouver Island in that amount of time - maybe with a stop in Seattle - another idea is to go to Whistler.

Don%26#39;t know why you posted this on the Eugene forum, but I%26#39;m sure the other regulars on this forum will see this and respond. If it turns out you want to come south toward Eugene and/or the central Cascades, let us know...and I%26#39;ll offer whatever advice I can.

Personally, within only 5 nights, I would skip going all the way to BC. Portland is a smaller, but better option than Seattle IMO. Not sure where you are coming from, but I would head east up the Columbia River Gorge for two nights (stay in or near Hood River), down to the Bend area of a couple nights (lots of places to stay, check out St. Francis School) and then back to Portland via the Santiam pass. You will see more desert areas and plenty of moutain scenery. Of course, you could try different wineries this year and a different coastal town, like Manzanita.

Seattle area shines when you will be in the PNW. With five days, good time to explore the area. Here%26#39;s an Inside Page, and more, to get you thinking.

You still have plenty to do in Oregon! Seattle is also very doable.

I agree that BC has too much travel time to make it worthwhile, though you could make a day trip of it out of Seattle on the Clipper. You won%26#39;t see all or even most of Seattle in 5 days, but if you%26#39;d like to say you went to Canada you could go.

Manzanita is a nice suggestion, you may also enjoy Gearhart, there is a great place to eat there, Pacific Way Bakery %26amp; Cafe. You could explore Ft. Stevens State Park and go to Astoria. www.oldoregon.com is a nice website for Astoria to see if this is something that may interest you. Have fun! :)

Seattle is a great place to visit, especially when the sun is shining. And there%26#39;s a good chance of that happening in August. Maybe couple a visit there with one to Washington%26#39;s wine country. It%26#39;s east of the Cascades, so generally different varietals than those offered at Oregon wineries.

You could also easily fill five days in central Oregon: hiking, rafting, biking, climbing, sightseeing, fishing... golf. Just a great area for outdoor recreation.

Love these ideas - thank you everyone. I will save Vancouver and that area for another trip.
