buying a sat nav

I am flying into Portland on Thursday night and would like to pick up a Tom Tom sat-nav before heading off across the States to Florida. Looks like WalMart are reasonable but would love your local knowledge in finding the best price in town. Picking up a hire car %26amp; staying at the Howard Johnson near the airport overnight (don%26#39;t know if that%26#39;s relevant) and will be looking for other items for our road trip in the morning.

I doubt you%26#39;ll find a cheaper price than at Walmart.

BTW, I LOVE my TomTom One!

Thanks...and it looks like there is a WalMart on SE-82nd (the same road as our hotel). I will see if I can order ahead via their web-site for a good deal. Got to love those bargains when you travel on a shoestring!

I use a Tom Tom over here (as a Taxi driver) and it is excellent. Hoping to convert to UK maps when we get back.

Looks like the nearest WalMart with one in stock is at Hood River. Oh well it%26#39;s on the way...Guess I can buy on-line and collect from the store.

If you are headed East from the airport, see if you can pick it up at the Walmart in Wood Village. The one on 82nd is out of your way, the one in Wood Village is right off I-84. That, and the one in Wood Village is much nicer than the one on 82nd. It is a Super Walmart, so you can get absolutely everything you need there. Not sure what else you are looking at picking up.

Thanks for the %26#39;heads-up%26#39; we are taking the i-84 so will definitely check it out. Going to need some basic travel stuff like a cool box, pillows and sleeping bag etc.

I am also on the hunt for classic clothes, large workman shirts with logos etc. are favorite and usually one or two in thrift stores. Adore finding local fairs/events car shows etc. Haven%26#39;t yet seen a car-boot sale (guess you would call it a car trunk sale in the States) anyway... ordinary people selling their unwanted stuff... like a collective garage sale, block or street sale, fund-raiser.

What a coincidence! DH and I were watching a program on TV last night about truckstops (TA was featured - that%26#39;s ';Truckstops of America';, lol) and I was remembering your proposed road trip and wondering if you had left yet!

Walmarts have the best prices on just about everything, including clothes. Also look for ';Goodwill';, those are second hand stores that are actually pretty nice. I know there is a large one out that way in Gresham(?), but it%26#39;s fairly far off the freeway and I haven%26#39;t a clue how to give you directions as we tend to stumble around and find things, LOL.

Have a good journey and don%26#39;t forget your trip report ;-)

The Goodwill is on Burnside in Gresham, and really isn%26#39;t anywhere close to the freeway.

However, just up the hill from Walmart (242nd and Stark) is the Salvation Army Thrift Store. I haven%26#39;t actually been inside, so I can%26#39;t speak for their selection. But, it isn%26#39;t that far from where you are already going to be, and if you are in to that sort of thing it is worth a shot.

I think the kind of sale you are referring to is also referred to as a swap meet. I am sure you will stumble across something.

Thanks for the directions...Salvation Army can be great and it%26#39;s always good to support the cause.

Yes...that%26#39;s it %26#39;Swap Meet%26#39; sounds about right, now I can look out for the right thing...we also have Auto-Jumble here where people sell vehicle related items. I happened across one in Florida last time I visited, in the grounds of a huge Flea Market where they hold a monthly car show.

Sir Winston Churchill once said that England and America were two great nations separated by a common language. I don%26#39;t really have anything to swap...but I get it. Our Car Boot (trunk) Sales don%26#39;t involve people selling their car boot either, just the stuff they brought inside it.
