japanese/rose test gardens

My husband and I are planning to visit the Japanese and International Rose Test gardens upon our arrival in Portland on May 23rd. I have questions about the logistics of getting there. We are planning to pick up a car when we arrive at the airport and will be staying at the Westin downtown. Would it be better just to drive to the gardens upon leaving the airport? I noticed that there is no MAX stop there. I read about a bus connecting MAX to the gardens, but it runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. I%26#39;m unsure if it literally starts on Memorial Day or if it starts Memorial Day weekend.

If we do decide to drive, will the same parking lot serve both of the gardens? They seem to be close together on the map.

Thanks!

Parking at the gardens won%26#39;t pose any problems for you...and, if the weather is clear and the afternoon sun is shining on Mt. Hood, the view from the Rose Gardens will be breathtaking. It will appear to be looming directly over the city below you.

And even if the weather isn%26#39;t being totally cooperative you will enjoy the gardens. I%26#39;d start with the Rose Garden and then move on to the Japanese Garden (the elegant serenity of which ought to ease your hectic travel day as you segue into dinner time).

Just to be clear, you won%26#39;t have to move your car in going from one garden to the next.

Assuming the Japanese and Rose Test Gardens are in the same place that we left them in LOL .... We used to walk from NW 23rd street up to the gardens. If the weather is co operative, it is a lovely way to see the area and the views. We took the train to the zoo then a free bus to the Gardens when we visited Portland, which was in September, but after we moved there, we used usually used the car ..

I loved the Japanese Gardens so .. take lots of photos, it is just the most beautiful place no matter the time of year or what kind of weather..

The parking lot is right if front of the gardens.. the Rose Test gardens are about 2 blocks down the road .. which is also a lovely area to take a walk.

we were at the gardens on a day like oregonpoppa described- amazing views of mt hood. the gardens were located adjacent to each other and were wonderful.

you should also try to see pittock mansio- it is in the same vicinity but bou have to drive there from the gardens for more excellent mt hood views.

to make your garden tour complete- check out the chinese gardens downtown- urban oasis in the middle of the city

I agree with the previous poster, try to see the Pittock Mansion while in this area. The Chinese Classical Gardens are also really cool, have tea there! :)
