I will be travelling from Yosemite National Park to Crater Lake this summer and am looking for a good place to stay the night.
So far I have it down to either one night at Virginia City Nevada ( at Silver Queen Hotel, Cobb Mansion B%26amp;B, or Edith Palmer Country Inn)
or Redding (Tiffany House B%26amp;B or Bridgehouse B%26amp; B) or Mount Shasta (O%26#39;Brien Mounting Inn)
I have read as many reviews as I can -- but can%26#39;t make up my mind. Can use your help
Stopover Ideas between Crater Lake and Yosemite
I think the difference is if you want to travel mostly via I-5 (assume you%26#39;re heading to I-5 from Yosemite), or travel on the ';back roads';?
It%26#39;s a long drive from Virginia City to Crater Lake, but Virginia City is kind of fun :-) It%26#39;s not a quick place to get into and away from, however.
I-5 is nice once you get north of about Redding, but the stretch from the Stockton area to there is rather plain and dreary.
Stopover Ideas between Crater Lake and Yosemite
The previous poster is correct. You can go east to over the back roads - Virginia City for gold rush, Reno to gamble. Then it%26#39;s dessert in the middle of nowhere up to Crater Lake, though that certainly has its own beauty. Or you can go west through the valley and then mountains on I-5.
Highway 49 northwest of Yosemite with Angels Camp and other gold rush towns is scenic and interesting. Outside Redding are ghost towns, and Mt. Shasta and Shasta Lake are scenic.
In Oregon, Ashland is a beautiful town with the Shakespeare Festival and parks.
You could also go part way on back roads through Lassen National Park (volcanic). There is also a beautiful state park (McArthur-Burney Falls) with waterfalls on highway 89.
I agree with IluvOregon, Hwy 89 through Lassen National Park is a very pretty drive. There are also several interesting inns and B%26amp;Bs in the town of McCloud on Hwy 89 just east of Mt. Shasta.
I%26#39;d take Hwy 395 from Reno area to Susanville, then take Hwy 139 to Klamath Falls and then on to Crater Lake. Hwy 139 is quite a nice drive.
You do not say rest of trip plan. is that all set and all you want id place to stay info? I do not kno those places sorry
We just made trip from Yosemite (3rd visit) to Portland with stops in Angels Camp and Redding. I5 sacto to Redding boring, But we have done that enough we just wanted to move along.
I agree with others route through Lassen NP much more interesting. we lived in redding 5 years and were in Lassen several times.
By the way Yosemite is world class, plan more than pass through Crater lake is grand but pass through can work to see more on coasr or near Bend
