Hi Aussie Friend,
We%26#39;ve just checked in here and see your post! We are Oregonians taking a short road trip over our 3-day holiday weekend and have never been to this part of Oregon. Oh my, it%26#39;s stunning, esp on this gorgeous weekend. Our temp is around 85 and it will cool off tonight. The Dreamers was recommended to me by TA because of its high ranking ... and it deserves it. It is most certainly mid-century modern, but is spotlessly clean. In checking the drawers just now, there is a basket of little extras: bandaid, paperclip, rubber bands, pen and emery board! Our two rooms each have a micro and tiny fridge. When we arr%26#39;d, we noticed our neighbors had several cases of beer, but as it turns out, the white noise of our AC would cancel any noise they might make into the late evening. This place is a hoot! And the trip today from Bend via Clarno, Spray, Kimberly and the Fossil Beds was to-die-for gorgeous --- something akin to your beautiful G.O.R. You will love it here (and we%26#39;re natives!) Heading out right now to the Grubsteak, which looks like it could be in rural Vic!
G%26#39;day,
Thanks for the encouraging message. We [ my adult daughter and I]will not be In John Day until mid July on our way back to base in San Francisco. We are going up to Seattle via the coast more or less and back via an inland route. From John Day we will have stops in Boise, Winnemucca,Reno and near Yosemite.
I have been to John Day before - several years ago having been to USA at least eight, probably ten and maybe twelve times starting back in the days of the space race when I worked for a contractor to NASA.
However my daughter has never been there and is logically starting at the top left hand corner.
Enjoy the rest of your trip. 73.
we lived in John Day for 5 years. Great place to live, so many outdoor things to do.
I am glad to hear someone is there and someone plans to go. more people shouldl
I have actually seriously been considering a trip over there myself, as I am a native Oregonian and have never been. So, I am glad someone else is here asking questions.
Much of NE Oreg is forested. you miss that if all you have seen of NE Oreg is from I-84.
John day site in the John Day R Valley surrounded by forests, though there is some dry land at lower elevations. Strawberry Mtns are impressive. Highest point well over 9000%26#39;
Drive on 26 from Prineville to Unity is pleasant drive with many changes. Drive from Burns on 395 to poin south of Pilot Rock is nice too, so is 244 from Ukiah to La Grande. so is 7 from John Day V to Baker.
Place I liked was Logan Valley where you get view of south side of Strawberries
