Best timing, routes, places to stay in SE OR

Plan to travel earliest reasonable (special interests geology, scenery) E. on 138 from Roseurg OR, then N. on 97 to Bend and John Day. Would also like to extend trip to Steens Mt. and Alvord Desert in SE part of state.

Would appreciate advice on when to go (passable roads, leafed-out trees, etc), where to stay, esp. in SE OR.

We did Bend-Burns-John Day-LaGrande-Columbia River last year in late May and loved it, though Diamond Lake was still ice-covered and some roads still closed.

We don%26#39;t hike and prefer not to drive more than a couple hundred miles a day...

Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful location for birding and other wildlife. A good visitor center, as well. You can drive the Refuge.

Will pack binoculars too, thanks!

Here%26#39;s the website for the historic hotel in Frenchglen.

And here%26#39;s some info on Steens Mountain (although you may have already found this by Googling Steens Mountain) and other attractions in the immediate area.

I have yet to visit this area and would be very happy to get your report on your experiences.
