summer skiing oregon

I am coming to oregon this summer, and having checked out many web sites, there is alot to do and see, but what is this skiing in summer like. I have tried to read as many reviews, but cant seem to get a true picture of what skking in summer snow is like and wheres the best area to go and the nicest hotel.

Is the snow deep and soft or thin and mushy, i like the film the shinning, but i dont want to go mad staying in a lonely resort, so whats the best area for nights out and food, and finally where is the best hotel.

I hope there is one place with all three, snow, fun town and hotel.

The US Olympic team used to train at Timberline, which was the first lift accessible ski area in the USA!

The Palmer Glacier is open year around. Skiers wearing shorts will be swooshing down in slushy snow while hikers hit the trails for some great hiking. As for night life and places to stay, Timberline Lodge is the only game at Timberline and it isn%26#39;t exactly a partiers paradise.

In order to get in some nightlife you would almost need to head down to Government Camp and hit Charlie%26#39;s or one of the other bars there.

I think Palmer Glaicer on Mt Hood is the only place open for summer skiing. It is skiing on a glacier- never done it- but snow looked kind of icy on the glacier and then they have these snow %26#39;gullys%26#39; that go farther down the mountian-they looked smushy. Last summer I hiked up to Palmer Glacier and saw some Italian guys skiing and then one stripped down to his shorts and skiied down the mountian!!! He was very excited to be skiing...

Not much for night life in general- Government Camp brewerys might be your best bet-rather than Timberline Lodge. Best hotel would definetly be Timberline Lodge-kind of pricey and reservations would be needed soon. The Shining-the mountain isnt THAT lonely!!! :)

You can usually ski at Mt. Bachelor in Bend usually well into June. There you can have all kinds of things to do within only a half hour of the slopes. This would be my suggestion if the snow conditions and timing work out for you. Lots of great restaurants and nightlife all over Bend.

For skiing past June, Timberline is the only choice, so your choice should be easy. The lodge isn%26#39;t ever a ghost town, there are always people. But you%26#39;ll want to go down the road to Government Camp for a couple extra choices. There%26#39;s a lodge there with a brewpub in it, the Mt Hood Inn. There are some restaurants at Timberline, a couple more at Govt. Camp, and a few more on the road down to Rhododendron. It%26#39;s not Aspen or Whistler, but there is summer skiing, US and International Ski Teams still train there in the summer, and there are people there all year, except for a couple weeks in September when they close for maintenance.

The snow at Timberline in the summer is deep and crusted in the mornings and deep and soft in the afternoons.

Hope this helps, have a great time!

We are interested in skiing Timberline in July or August - can anyone tell us how much of the mountain is actually open at that time? Is it a decent amount or are we talking three runs and one lift? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

The Palmer Glacier is the only show in town for summer skiing and it%26#39;s for very experienced skiers only. Check with Timberline for a schedule of summer ski camps and classes.
