Portland's White House and the Saturday Market

Thanks for all your help. I have two additional questions.

Is the Saturday Market something we should try to fit into our schedule? We like artists and hand made items and always try to find something hand made as our souvenir. We don%26#39;t go in for trinkets -- in Hawaii, we brought back a hand made dining room table (that is the largest and most expensive souvenir ever for us -- will not be repeating it again!), in Colorado, an original painting, in South Africa flatware, In Taos a stone faced clock -- I never have something in mind -- just know it when we see it -- I love had blown glass as well and could use a lampshade for a lamp I have --

So I want to know if that is the type of place the Saturday Market is and if we should try to fit it in.

If we do, is it something we could do and still do a day trip to Mt St Helens or is that trying to do too much in one day? If it is, perhaps we could fly in on Thursday night and spend Friday at Mt. St Helens and Saturday in the city so that we could do the Saturday Market. I was planning on flying out Friday morning so if we could do Thursday night and not take an extra day off -- that would work.

As for Portland%26#39;s White House. I am thinking of staying there and using the b7b.com gift certificates I already have. I have enough for 3 nights there so it would not increase the cost of the trip for us. But they do not have their own parking and I need to know if street parking would be a problem there.

Thanks much!

yes you should try to fit in the sat mkt but i dont think they sell tables but you already have one so thats not an issue

its a push but you could do both in the same day --totally depends on how much time you want to spend at each place

have stayed at the white house -- its on a residential street so there isnt a parking problem there -- as i recall they have a circular driveway but i dont remember if there was enough room and if i parked there

Easy to do the Market, but I think opening has been delayed. Due to construction or some such thing. It is a great place to see and purchase wonderful creative artist%26#39;s offerings. If you are coming when it is open, do not miss it.

If you rise and shine around 10 AM you can visit the Market, have a bit of lunch and head out to St Helen%26#39;s and stil be back in Portland for a nice dinner.

The White House is a great B%26amp;B. It is on the NE side so you will need a car, but sounds like that is not an issue.

Have a wonderful visit!

If you love handcrafted items, you should really try to make it to Portland Saturday Market. All the items that are sold have to be made by the vendor or his family.

It is under the Burnside Bridge and opens at 10am on Saturdays and 11am on Sundays.

I know there are several beautiful glass blowers at the PSM.

Don%26#39;t confuse the import market that is across the tracks with being part of Portland Saturday Market vendors. They are 2 totally separate markets.

Mamabo,

The market has been open since March. They have delayed the move to the new location which is across Natio Parkway. The Tribune said it was delayed until May. However, the market is still open and operating in their current location. :)

Here%26#39;s the market%26#39;s website...with answers to lots of your questions.

I would not combine the market and Mt. St. Helens in the same day. You%26#39;ll want to leave for Mt. St. Helens right after breakfast and, considering travel time there and back plus the time spent at the visitor centers and observatory, it%26#39;ll be almost dinner time when you get back to Portland.

You can whiz thru the Saturday Market in an hour or so...or it might take much longer if you start finding things of interest.

I am with oregonpoppa, if you are going to do Mt. St. Helens, you need to dedicate the entire day to it. If you get too late of a start, you are going to feel like you are rushing yourself.

Thanks much for your response. As I have planned where to stay, I realized that I am not using all the b%26amp;b certificates I purchased a year or two ago. So flying out after work Thursday would enable us to do both and not cost us additional out of pocket money -- except for that potentially expensive market! We could then go to Mt St Helens on Friday. We would have all day Saturday in Portland to do the Saturday Market and something else.

Does anyone know anything about the underground tour? My husband found it on the internet and is interested in doing it -- we should be able to do both that day as it is at 2.

I have not done done the underground tour. However, I did have a Canandian friend that did the tour and enjoyed the tour. It leaves from Old Town area.

Just a thought since you like handcrafted goods. If you are going to just devote one day to Portland Saturday Market, you might want to hop on the Max and go past the Square to The Real Mother Goose. They are a fine craft gallery. Right off the Max Line.
