3days in s. oregon

It%26#39;s our first time in Oregon. We r going tomorrow with no plans, which worries me. Is the weather fair for hiking around Crater Lake? We want to watch a play in Ashland, but other than that we%26#39;re not sure if we should head toward the beach or mountains?

You don%26#39;t say where you%26#39;re coming from...info that would help us give you travel suggestions. As for hiking around Crater Lake this week, only if you%26#39;re a snowshoer or cross country skier.

Our usual Ashland routine this time of year is to catch a couple of plays over two days, enjoy the fine restaurants and poke around the shops on the main drag. www.osfashland.org

You can get tickets pick your seats online (they%26#39;re all good, even the least expensive...especially if you get seats right next to the more expensive ones).

This is still the economy season, so the tickets are quite reasonably priced. If a show is sold out you can usually find people selling their extra tickets in front of the ticket booth an hour or so before the show. Some b%26amp;bs also have show tickets as part of their package deals. You need to check with the b%26amp;bs.

Ashland definitely deserves a two-day stay.

Crater Lake%26#39;s southern entrance is probably the only one open and if the weather is nice it%26#39;s worth a look-see. Otherwise, it%26#39;s all still snowbound.

Getting to the coast (that%26#39;s what we call the beach in Oregon) involves quite a bit more driving and time. The only route I%26#39;d recommend this time of year would be #199 to Crescent City and then up #101 to the southern coast...what we call the Banana Belt.

But, again, we don%26#39;t know where you%26#39;re coming from and whether this would fit into your 3 days. The other routes you might find on some of the map services from Ashland to the coast involve extremely dangerous (sometimes fatal) forest roads across the wintry mountains, routes which are probably (and should be) closed to automobile passage.

Will repeat here:

*Do not* take any Mapquest route across the coast mountain range from Grants Pass to Gold Beach. The road is mostly gravel, no signposting, no cell phone, no services. It is not a highway.

Crater Lake is heavily snowbound. All mountains have snow. The coast will have rain after Tues. and is far too cold to swim.

Driving from N. California to Oregon about a 5 hour drive

Since the plays are in the evening and we want to see nature can you suggest some scenic routes if we make Ashalnd are home base for 3 nights

You might like Jacksonville. Also this might help:

No plays on Mondays, but there are 1:30 p.m. matinees on Tuesday and Wednesdays (as it happens, both days the matinee is the farce ';The Servant of Two Masters, which is also Tuesday night%26#39;s offering). You could see ';Servant'; at Tuesday%26#39;s matinee, have a great dinner and see either ';Macbeth'; or ';Dead Man%26#39;s Cell Phone'; Wednesday evening. That would leave time to check out Crater Lake on Wednesday; perhaps drive up to Mt. Ashland or a drive to Jacksonville and the surrounding area. Not to mention, more exploration of Ashland itself, including Lithia Park, and shopping...and more eating!

Check out the Ashland Plaza Hotel for a nice place to stay, we also like the Ashland Springs Hotel. Amuse, Wincheser House, Cheateaulin and Peerless are great places for meals in Ashland. Have fun! :)

Looks to me like you have a plan! It%26#39;s best to stay flexible, and make decisions based on the weather. Which means, don%26#39;t head up to Crater Lake on an overcast day; there%26#39;s a good chance you wouldn%26#39;t even see the surface of the lake.

Other sightseeing possibilities include Oregon Caves and Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park (actually in CA).
