planning our 1st visit to sunriver. two familys of 4 + grandparents.

Is it worth the extra cost to stay at the resort vs. finding home on our own?

benefits stated are: access to pools %26amp; spa, reduced golf rates and immediate tee times, Discounts on resort owned recreation.

We have done yearly trips just like what you are planning, with all the family.

I find that the homes rented directly through Sunriver itself are more expensive than comparables rented through other agencies. Plus, they require 50% upfront. We usually rent through Sunray Inc, who provides pool passes, and has a much friendlier deposit policy. Plus, Sunray and a few other agencies (excluding Sunriver Resort itself) have homes that have access to Mavericks. That is a huge bonus!

All that said, we have also rented directly with an owner. I found her via my hairdresser, but is listed on Craigslist as well. She did provide pool passes, but not the unlimited that Sunray provides. It was still a great deal though, all things considered.

So now that I have probably thoroughly confused you, my suggestion would be to look to Sunray, Bennington and those companies that have access to Mavericks. I have not used the other companies, but have heard good things about all of them. We have always been pleased with Sunray, both the homes and the service. With a large group, it is nice to have the unlimited pool passes. The golfers in our group have never had a problem with tee times, but access to Crosswater is limited.

I%26#39;ve not used VRBO or other private rentals. One drawback with these is the possible lack of backup if they provide, well, no backup, such as plumbing, broken chairs, etc. SunRay does. Perhaps so do the other rental management companies. You%26#39;d better seek your home now, you%26#39;ll need, apparently, a larger one, and time flies. FYI, many homes available have no AC; though it can be hot during the summer, it cools off nicely at night. It%26#39;s truly a nice place for all ages.

Though I appreciate the temptation to go with a management company in Sunriver, you should know they charge extra for those ';unlimited'; passes to the pools and tennis courts. As a long time renter of both privately owned and professionally managed companies, I can tell you that there are advantages to both, but I preferred (prior to my buying my own house) renting from the owners directly to get a better house for the money. Management companies charge extra ';rec fees'; for those passes. Even though I had to pay my own way into the pool when using a privately owned house, I found we didn%26#39;t use the pools much due to overcrowding and dirty water and several pool closures due to fecal matter in the water. If you have little ones, you may want to put them in a kids%26#39; camp for a day, which includes swim lessons. That is not included with the passes. Also, there are awesome lakes nearby Sunriver where you could spend a day swimming, kayaking, etc. instead of poolside with hundreds of others. As for Maverick%26#39;s, even with a pass, it costs money to do the rock wall as well as the wave rider ($20 last time I checked) and it%26#39;s much smaller than you think. One person at a time small! There%26#39;s so much to do in Sunriver outside, why waste your time inside a building? My kids love the bike trails, Benham Falls, raft float down the Deschutes, the horses, golf, kids%26#39; activities, and restaurants. And Fort Rock park is fun as well. So, bottom line, decide what kind of accommodations you like, know what kind of activities your family will enjoy, and look for the best accommodations at the best price to enjoy what you like!
