My sisters and I (late 40%26#39;s) are planning a drive from Seattle down to California. Any suggestions on where to stay in the coastal Oregon area? Oceanview of course, maybe even some rugged Cliff views. We like Bed and breakfasts. Will probably stay one night in the northern and one in the southern area. Looking for an experience. Also, Northern California ideas???

Check out the Ocean Lodge in Cannon Beach, the Stephanie Inn next door is also very nice, what is your budget for lodging? www.cannon-beach.net is a nice website for this area. Enjoy your trip and welcome! :)

Thanks, I will check those out. Budget is up for grabs, if we spend a little more in Oregon we will stay a bit more moderatly when we get further down to Calif. Want only nice clean rooms that have great views and charm.
Since Syrahgirl has not stayed at the places she suggested, you might want to check recent reviews to get details of what people like and dislike about the properties.
On the northern coast, Cannon Beach and Arch Cape are nice towns. Arch Cape is just a couple miles from CB but has a much smaller feel to it. Inn At Arch Cape gets good reviews, but I don%26#39;t know about views. There is also Arch Cape Inn which is larger, but has views.
When are you coming? In the summer months many places around Cannon Beach have 2 night minimums, but with the economy places are constantly changing their policies. So when you find a place that looks good, definitely give them a call to see if a one night stay will work.
Here are some ideas for you, although I have not stayed in any of them. They get excellent reviews here on TA:

Bandon would probably be a convenient stop along the southern coast, try http://www.lighthouselodging.com/

In northern California, you have a lot of B%26amp;B options around Eureka. Try the teeny town of Trinidad (Lost Whale); Eureka (several, try Carter House); Ferndale (several, all Victorian); and Fortuna has a farm B%26amp;B.
I like, and have stayed at, :), the Fireside Motel; its sister, slightly more money, Overleaf Lodge, is next door. Fantastic setting, try for ocean FRONT rooms. Near Yachats and Waldport, a very scenic area.

stephanie inn is around 350.00 per nite but it comes with wine tasting and a great breakfast
Have to be a ';mighty darn good'; breakfast for that price, LOL . . .
Wow, Great ideas. Thanks to all!! I love the research project almost as much as the trips I have taken. Will check them all out. Not traveling until late spring 2010. I live in the Northeast so am looking forward to visiting west coast.
Overleaf Lodge is already on my list of contenders. Looks great. Thanks!! Is that a good area to explore for just a day or so?
Cav, yes, absolutely stunning scenery. The web pages provided describe it plus I believe the two lodges have an ';attractions'; section on their websites. Example: we just spend three days at the Fireside, ran the coast, so to speak, from Florence to Newport, with that as a base. Decent dining, relaxed, informal/very, in Yachats itself.
